Niger State Government imposes Dusk-to-Dawn Curfew in Minna amid rising insecurity
The Governor of Niger State, Farmer Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, has imposed a curfew in Minna, the state capital, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, as part of efforts to address the recent surge in criminal activities, including attacks and killings across the city.
The new directive includes the restriction of movement for commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators during the curfew hours. However, exemptions have been made for medical emergencies.
Governor Bago announced the development on Tuesday during a high-level security meeting with traditional leaders and heads of security agencies at the Government House.
He emphasised that the curfew is a temporary measure intended to tackle the escalating security challenges in the capital. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that it would not remain passive while criminal elements continued to endanger the public.
As part of the new security strategy, the Governor instructed district, village, and ward heads to keep detailed records of visitors entering their communities. He also issued a stern warning that any residence found to be sheltering suspected criminals or operating as a base for illicit drug activities would face demolition.
In his remarks, the Governor called on security agencies to intensify operations, dismantle criminal networks, and apprehend offenders. He further urged parents to caution their children, warning that anyone found engaging in violence or criminality would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
Governor Bago reiterated that ensuring public safety is a shared responsibility and called on all stakeholders to work collaboratively to restore peace in Minna.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago, as well as various traditional rulers and security chiefs from across the state.
