Niger State Govt reaffirms commitment to rule of law in Baddegi FM controversy

The Niger State Government has restated its commitment to due process, democracy, and media freedom in response to recent concerns involving Badegi FM 90.1, a privately-owned radio station in the state.
In a statement issued Monday, August 4, 2025, by the Ministry of Information and Strategy, the government clarified that despite Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s directive calling for the station’s suspension over alleged unethical broadcasting and incitement, Badegi FM remains operational pending a formal probe by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Governor Bago had expressed his concerns during an expanded APC caucus meeting in Minna on August 1.
However, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, who was present at the event, reminded all parties that only the NBC has the legal authority to suspend or revoke broadcast licenses in Nigeria.
To that end, the state government disclosed that it had formally initiated communication with the NBC regarding the allegations against Badegi FM.
The move, according to the statement, underscores Niger State’s respect for lawful regulatory oversight and the independence of press institutions.
“The continued operation of Badegi FM 90.1 serves as clear evidence of the state’s respect for democratic values, regulatory integrity, and press freedom,” said Hon. Binta Mamman, Commissioner for Information and Strategy.
She added that the Ministry would soon convene a stakeholder dialogue involving media houses, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and other players in the communication sector to deepen trust and promote ethical journalism in the state.
All media outlets in Niger State were advised to strictly adhere to the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and maintain high ethical standards in news dissemination.
The government called on the public and all stakeholders to remain calm and await the outcome of the NBC’s investigation in the overall interest of peace and national development.
