Niger tanker explosion: Death toll rises to 98, 69 injured, 20 shops destroyed

The death toll from the recent tanker explosion in Diko, Niger State, has climbed to 98, with 69 people sustaining injuries, according to updated figures released by authorities.

The devastating incident, which occurred earlier this week, also resulted in the destruction of 20 shops, leaving local business owners grappling with significant losses.

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the figures as of midday on 20 January 2025. He described the explosion as a catastrophic event that has deeply impacted the community.

Emergency response teams remain on the ground, working tirelessly to assist the injured and recover the remains of the deceased.

Expressing his condolences, Baba-Arah pledged the commitment of the state government and NSEMA to provide comprehensive support to victims and ensure that those injured receive necessary medical treatment.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. The state government and NSEMA are fully committed to supporting the victims and ensuring adequate care for those injured,” he stated.
