NUJ calls for clear, transparent framework for handling election results

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over ongoing legislative deliberations on the framework for the conduct of future elections, particularly provisions relating to the handling, transmission, and movement of results from polling units.

The Union noted that as a professional body committed to democratic development, accountability, and public confidence in governance, clarity in electoral procedures remains critical to national stability. It warned that any ambiguity surrounding the management of election results could undermine public trust and heighten political tension.

The NUJ observed that Nigerians have consistently called for reforms that guarantee transparency and verifiability in the electoral process. It stressed that modern democracies increasingly rely on digital technologies to protect the sanctity of the ballot and ensure that election outcomes genuinely reflect the will of the electorate, free from unnecessary delays and uncertainties.

According to the Union, the adoption of technology-driven mechanisms for the prompt transmission of polling unit results to designated collation platforms would significantly reduce suspicion, enhance transparency, and minimise post-election disputes. It noted that a clear, consistent, and technologically supported process would strengthen institutional credibility and deepen democratic culture.

As lawmakers conclude consultations and fine-tune legislative provisions ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NUJ urged them to prioritise measures capable of inspiring confidence among voters. The Union emphasised that institutionalising clear and enforceable guidelines for the real-time transmission of election results would demonstrate a strong commitment to credible and peaceful polls.

The NUJ stated that Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve and that electoral reforms must align with global best practices while addressing the aspirations of the people. It added that strengthening the framework for managing election results would contribute significantly to political stability and reinforce citizens’ faith in democratic governance.

The Union called on all stakeholders to act in the national interest and ensure that the electoral architecture for future elections promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.
