NUJ commends security forces over arrest of Ansaru leaders

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has applauded the Federal Government and security forces for the successful operation that led to the capture of two top commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group.
The arrest of Mahmud Muhammad Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, alias Malam Mamuda, was announced by the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu. The union described the breakthrough as a major milestone in Nigeria’s battle against terrorism.
Ansaru, a deadly splinter faction, has carried out some of the nation’s most violent attacks over the past decade. The NUJ said the development demonstrates the courage and professionalism of security agencies, stressing that the recovery of digital evidence during the operation will further aid in dismantling terror networks and preventing future threats.
According to the NUJ, the outcome reflects a more advanced security strategy that emphasizes intelligence, precision, and long-term national stability.
The union saluted the bravery of security operatives who put their lives on the line daily and urged the government to continue supporting them, while ensuring justice is served swiftly and transparently.
“Terrorism threatens our peace, development, and democratic values. As journalists and defenders of the public interest, we stand in solidarity with all efforts to restore lasting peace and security in Nigeria,” NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, said in a statement on Tuesday.
He further encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant, support security agencies, and resist divisive narratives, stressing that unity remains key in overcoming terrorism.
