The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Grace Ike, has emphasised the importance of peace, unity, and responsible journalism in fostering national cohesion. Speaking during the Breaking of Fast with Muslim journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, she urged media professionals to use their platforms to promote tolerance and understanding among Nigeria’s diverse communities.

“It is an honour to join you today during this sacred month of Ramadan, a time of reflection, compassion, and unity,” Ike stated. “I extend my gratitude to all Muslim journalists for their dedication to truth and service. I also extend the same goodwill to our Christian faithful during this Lenten period.”

Ike stressed that Nigeria, as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, must prioritise peace and unity to ensure sustainable development. She highlighted the role of journalists in shaping narratives that either divide or unite society.

“As Muslim and Christian journalists, we have a responsibility to report stories that foster interfaith dialogue and tolerance,” she noted. “By highlighting our shared values, we can bridge divides and counter prejudice.”

She further emphasised the need for fairness in reporting, ensuring that no group feels marginalised or misrepresented. “Upholding fairness builds trust among communities and strengthens societal cohesion,” she added.

Ike urged journalists to commit to using their platforms for peacebuilding. “As Muslim journalists, let us embody the values of Ramadan—compassion, humility, and service—in our professional lives. Together, we can create a narrative that inspires hope and harmony for all Nigerians,” she concluded.

Delivering a Ramadan sermon, the Deputy Imam of Sabon Lugbe Mosque, Yusuf Abdulateef Olaoye, highlighted the spiritual, social, and personal significance of Ramadan.

“Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a sacred period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual growth for Muslims worldwide,” he said.

He elaborated on its importance, citing key Islamic teachings.

“Ramadan is an opportunity for spiritual renewal, mercy, and forgiveness,” he explained, referencing Islamic teachings.”It was in this blessed month that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),” citing Quran 2:185.”Ramadan fosters community spirit, as Muslims come together for Iftar and Tarawih prayers,” he said. “It is also a time for increased charity and generosity.”

“It is an opportunity for self-reflection and moral improvement,” Olaoye stated, urging individuals to seek forgiveness and practice kindness.

“We must embrace unity, charity, and love for one another,” he added. “Ramadan teaches us to forgive those who have wronged us and to seek forgiveness from Allah. Whether Christian or Muslim, we must worship God with sincerity in our workplaces and everyday lives.”

Representing the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olutunji Disu commended the NUJ FCT Council for its contributions to security awareness and public enlightenment.

“We have been working together as a united force, and we shall continue to live as brothers,” Disu affirmed. “The NUJ FCT Council has played a vital role in disseminating security information to the public, amplifying our voices, and providing crucial intelligence that aids our work.”

Qasim Akinreti, representing the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, also emphasised the importance of mutual relationships and unity during Ramadan.

“The essence of Ramadan is to bring people together—to sit, dine, and share in unity,” he said. “As a former Chairman of the Lagos State NUJ Council, I understand the importance of fostering good relationships among colleagues.”

He extended the Director-General’s regards to the NUJ FCT Council and wished them continued success in their endeavours.

The event underscored the significance of unity, responsible journalism, and interfaith harmony in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic and social fabric.
