In a bid to strengthen ties and learn from the past, Chair of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Grace Ike, recently brought together former chairmen of the union for a special gathering in Abuja.
The meeting, held at Sinoki Restaurant, was aimed at promoting unity, sharing experiences, and encouraging teamwork among current and past leaders of the union.
Prominent former chairmen in attendance included Comrade Amos Dunia, Comrade Abduljelil Adebayo, Comrade Shok Jok, Comrade Alhaji Ndamadu Sule, Comrade Jacob Edi, Comrade Malachy Uzendu, and Comrade Paul Ella Abechi. They spoke about the challenges they faced during their time in office and shared valuable lessons from their leadership experiences.
While welcoming the former chairmen, Comrade Grace Ike thanked them sincerely for attending the meeting, especially on such short notice. She took the moment to express her deep appreciation for their continued support and encouragement, saying their blessings had given her the strength and confidence needed to lead the council effectively.
Many have praised the move as a wise and forward-thinking step. It showed the current leadership’s openness to learning and growing, with a focus on building a strong and united NUJ FCT Council.
Grace Ike, the first woman to lead the council, has been described as a determined and focused leader. Despite the controversies surrounding her election, she has shown resilience and a clear vision for improving journalism in the FCT.
Under her leadership, the council has introduced new projects to support journalists—focusing on professional training, ethics, and welfare. Her efforts have earned respect from members and observers alike.
The meeting with former chairmen is seen as a model for future leadership, encouraging upcoming executives to seek advice from those who came before them. It’s also expected to help improve decision-making and problem-solving within the union.
Attending alongside Chair Grace Ike were other key members of the executive, including Vice Chairman Yahaya Ndambabo, Secretary Jide Oyekunle, Assistant Secretary Sharon Emephia, Ex-Officio 1 Ebriku John Friday, and Christiana Ekpa, Chair of the Peoples Daily Chapel.
With such teamwork and vision, many believe the NUJ FCT Council is moving in a positive direction.
