Onana’s errors put Manchester United’s Europa League hopes at risk
Manchester United’s chances of progressing in the Europa League are now uncertain after playing out a 2-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, as goalkeeper André Onana came under fire for two costly mistakes.
Lyon took the lead 25 minutes into the game when Thiago Almada’s wide free-kick slipped through Onana’s hands and into the net.
Although United managed to fight back and lead 2-1, Onana’s night worsened when he failed to hold on to another shot late in the match, allowing Rayan Cherki to slot home the equaliser.
So far, Onana has been directly responsible for nine errors leading to goals in all competitions since the beginning of last season—more than any other goalkeeper currently in the Premier League.
The result now leaves the quarter-final tie wide open ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next Thursday.
