Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed as Nottingham Forest manager after just 40 days in charge, following his team’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

The Australian’s short tenure came to an abrupt end when club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who left his seat before the end of the match at City Ground, confirmed the decision immediately after full-time.

A statement released by Forest on X read: “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

Postecoglou’s time at Forest now stands as the shortest managerial reign for a permanent Premier League coach to leave a club mid-season. Appointed on September 9, he failed to secure a win in any of his eight matches in charge across all competitions, collecting only one point from five league games.

Forest currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone. The club will now be searching for their third manager of the season after Nuno Espirito Santo was also dismissed last month.

Before joining Forest, Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham in June despite winning the Europa League in his second season. Speaking ahead of the Chelsea match, he had remained confident, saying, “If I am given time at a club, it always ends with me and a trophy.”

The defeat to Chelsea summed up a frustrating spell for the 60-year-old. Despite a bright start from Forest, teenager Josh Acheampong gave Chelsea the lead early in the second half, followed by Pedro Neto’s free-kick and a late goal from captain Reece James — marking his 200th appearance for the club.

Chelsea, missing several key players including Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez, still proved too strong, climbing to fourth place in the Premier League table.

Reports suggest that former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche is being considered as a possible replacement for Postecoglou.
