Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff passes away at 81
Jimmy Cliff, the legendary Jamaican singer, songwriter, and actor who brought reggae from Jamaica to the global stage, has passed away at the age of 81.
The news was confirmed by his wife, Latifa Chambers, who stated that Cliff died following a seizure complicated by pneumonia.
Born on July 30, 1944, in Somerton, St. James Parish, Jamaica, Cliff began writing songs as a schoolboy, inspired by local sound systems. At 14, he moved to Kingston, adopted the stage name Jimmy Cliff, and soon signed with Island Records. In 1965, he relocated to London, becoming one of the first Jamaican artists to achieve international fame.
Cliff starred in the 1972 cult classic film The Harder They Come, whose groundbreaking soundtrack introduced reggae to worldwide audiences and set the stage for Bob Marley’s later global success. Iconic tracks such as “The Harder They Come,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” and “Sitting in Limbo” remain timeless reggae classics.
Spanning six decades, Cliff’s career showcased extraordinary versatility, blending reggae with soul, R&B, and pop, solidifying his legacy as one of music’s most influential figures.
