Rivers PDP loses grip as six more Federal lawmakers cross over to APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another major setback in Rivers State following the defection of six of its members in the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defecting lawmakers are Robinson Dekor, Solomon Bob, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi, and Felix Nwaeke. Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary.
According to Abbas, the lawmakers attributed their decision to “divisions and unresolved political crisis within the PDP,” which they said had made it difficult for them to function effectively within the party.
With the latest development, the PDP’s strength in the Rivers State caucus of the House has dropped sharply from 12 members to just two. The remaining PDP lawmakers are the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and Kelechi Nwogu.
The defections come barely a week after three other Rivers PDP lawmakers ,Boniface Emerengwa, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, and Boma Goodhead also defected to the APC, further weakening the opposition party’s presence in the state.
The APC has described the wave of defections as a sign of growing confidence in the ruling party, while the PDP continues to grapple with internal challenges that have led to the steady loss of its lawmakers from Rivers State.
