Scorching Heatwave hits Nigeria: NiMet issues urgent earning

The public has been alerted to an imminent rise in temperatures across multiple states, increasing the risk of heat stress over the next three to four days. Authorities warn that both daytime and nighttime temperatures will soar, accompanied by high humidity levels, making conditions particularly uncomfortable.
The states expected to experience the highest levels of thermal discomfort include:
- North-Central & Eastern States: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Cross River, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
- Other Vulnerable Areas: Parts of the Southwest, coastal regions, and states such as Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.
Health Risks & Productivity Concerns
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat may result in:
- Fatigue and irritability
- Reduced cognitive and motor function
- Decreased work productivity
How to Stay Safe
Authorities have issued the following safety guidelines to mitigate the impact of the heatwave:
- Stay Cool: Use fans, air conditioners, or other cooling devices to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
- Dress Light: Wear loose, breathable clothing to allow air circulation.
- Hydrate Regularly: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
- Limit Sun Exposure: Reduce outdoor activities, particularly in direct sunlight.
- Avoid Peak Heat Hours: Stay indoors between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, when temperatures are highest.
- Use Protective Gear: Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from sun exposure.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to take these precautions seriously to prevent heat-related illnesses and maintain their well-being during this period of extreme weather.
