Sinner, Swiatek advance comfortably as Gauff survives scare in US Open openers
World number one Jannik Sinner began his US Open title defence on a dominant note Tuesday, brushing aside unseeded Czech Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.
The four-time Grand Slam champion, who recently withdrew from the Cincinnati final due to illness, showed no signs of weakness at Arthur Ashe Stadium as he powered through with seven aces to secure a spot in the second round.
In the women’s singles, Iga Swiatek also cruised through her opener, defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2 in a commanding display.
However, American star Coco Gauff had a much tougher outing, enduring a marathon battle against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. After nearly three hours on court, Gauff edged through 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 to advance to the next round, to the delight of her home crowd.
