Southern Governors, traditional rulers meet in Ogun to address regional security, economic priorities
Southern governors and traditional rulers convened in Ogun State on Tuesday for a high-level meeting aimed at strengthening regional cooperation on security, economic development and political stability. The gathering brought together state executives from the South-West, South-East and South-South, alongside leading monarchs and cultural custodians across the region.
Hosted in Abeokuta, the meeting focused on growing concerns over insecurity, economic pressures, and the need for coordinated action to promote development across southern states. Participants emphasized the urgency of addressing issues such as banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
Sources familiar with the deliberations said the leaders discussed strategies for strengthening inter-state collaboration, improving intelligence sharing, and supporting community-based security frameworks. The role of traditional rulers in early warning systems, peacebuilding and conflict resolution was also highlighted as central to restoring stability.
The meeting further examined economic challenges affecting the region, including declining revenue streams, rising living costs, and the need to boost intra-regional trade, infrastructure development, and youth employment. Governors reportedly called for a unified front in engaging the Federal Government on fiscal federalism, resource control and equitable allocation of national resources.
In his remarks, the host governor welcomed participants and underscored the importance of unity among southern states at a time of national uncertainty. He noted that traditional rulers remain key stakeholders in governance and must be integrated into policymaking processes that impact local communities.
A communique is expected to be issued at the end of the meeting outlining resolutions and next steps for joint action.
The gathering marks one of the strongest demonstrations of regional cooperation among southern leaders in recent months, as they seek to address shared challenges and promote sustainable development across the region.
