Tinubu appoints Adeyinka Famadewa as first-ever special adviser on Homeland Security
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (retd) as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, creating a new role at the federal level for the first time in Nigeria’s history.
The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation), conveyed through a circular signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.
According to the statement, the creation of the office reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening internal security coordination, enhancing intelligence-driven operations, and improving inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging security threats nationwide.
It noted that while some states have previously created similar positions at sub-national level, no Nigerian president has ever established a dedicated homeland security advisory office within the presidency.
Famadewa, who brings over three decades of military and intelligence experience, previously served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) between 2015 and 2021. During that period, he played a key role in establishing the Intelligence Fusion Centre, which integrated major security and intelligence agencies including the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces.
Since retirement, he has worked as a senior research fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja and has contributed to national security policy research, including authorship of a monograph on policing and national security.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new office will strengthen coordination of homeland security efforts, intelligence integration, and proactive risk management under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
