Tinubu, Governors engage NLC leaders in strategic meeting
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, President Bola Tinubu’s engagement with governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) is being seen as part of broader efforts to consolidate political influence ahead of the polls.
Political observers note that the meeting signals early mobilisation and coordination within the ruling party, with an eye on shaping public opinion amid ongoing economic challenges.
A prominent labour leader told newsmen that unions remain a powerful mobilisation bloc, capable of swaying public sentiment during periods of economic hardship. “Wage debates, fuel subsidy removals, and inflation have tested labour-government relations. Direct engagement at Aso Rock signals an attempt to reset the narrative — or prevent escalation,” he said.
He added that labour is expected to be a decisive political force in the 2027 elections. “The summit could reset labour-government relations amid economic pressures,” he noted.
The labour leader also highlighted the governors’ involvement in the talks, describing it as a sign of coordinated political alignment. “Its outcome may determine if negotiation replaces street protests as the main channel of labour influence,” he added.
The PGF gathering, therefore, is seen not only as a forum for party cohesion but also as a strategic engagement with key stakeholders, including organised labour, to ensure political stability and public support leading up to the elections.
