Traditional leadership tougher than governing a state – Olubadan

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, says occupying the throne is far more demanding than presiding over a state government.

The monarch, who once served as Governor of Oyo State, made the remark on Monday when he received the Oniru of Iruland, Lagos State, Oba Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.

Oba Ladoja explained that the burden of traditional leadership is heavier because monarchs lack coercive authority and operate without a defined funding structure—unlike state governments that command institutions, budgets and enforcement mechanisms.

He stressed the need to assign constitutional roles to traditional rulers, given their strategic closeness to the grassroots and the trust communities place in them.

“The expectations of the people regarding the Olubadan stool are enormous because of the widespread jurisdiction we cover,” the monarch said. “This is why we must think outside the box so as not to disappoint our people who rely on us.”

The Olubadan also recalled his years on Lagos Island with nostalgia, describing his time in the state as a rewarding phase of his life.

Earlier, Oba Lawal commended Oba Ladoja for his leadership qualities, noting the unique blend of public administration and traditional authority that comes with transitioning from government office to the throne.

The Olubadan was joined by top chiefs including Ekarun Balogun, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, and former Senate Leader, Agbaakin Olubadan, Chief Teslim Folarin. The visiting Oniru was accompanied by his chiefs and aides.
