US President Donald Trump is set to attend the men’s singles final of the US Open on Sunday, marking his first appearance at Flushing Meadows since 2015.

The match will feature top seeds Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Jannik Sinner of Italy in what is expected to be a high-profile showdown.

The 79-year-old president, who was previously booed alongside his wife Melania during his last visit to the tournament as a presidential candidate, is anticipated to receive a similarly mixed reaction in his overwhelmingly Democratic hometown.

Alcaraz welcomed the attention Trump’s attendance would bring, saying, “I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it, but I think attending the tennis match is great for tennis to have the president at the final.”

Security at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is expected to be heightened due to Trump’s presence.

Since retaking office in January, Trump has made appearances at several major sporting events, including the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey, the Super Bowl, Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts, and the Daytona 500. He also plans to attend the Ryder Cup later this month and is reportedly preparing to host a UFC fight at the White House.

Trump has been promoting upcoming global sporting events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, calling them part of a “Golden Age of America.”

The last sitting US president to attend the US Open was Bill Clinton, who watched the women’s final in 2000. Trump was also present at the time and shared a cordial moment with Clinton.

Despite being a New York native, Trump now resides in his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and has returned to the city sparingly, including during a high-profile criminal trial last year. Sunday’s visit will be his first to New York since beginning his second term.

He is expected to return to the city later this month for a baseball game marking the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks and to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 23.
