Trump to meet Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado in Washington next week
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado is expected to visit Washington, D.C. next week, and that he plans to meet with her, according to several news agencies.
Trump made the remark during an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity” program on Thursday, saying he understands Machado will be in the U.S. “next week sometime” and that he looks forward to “saying hello” to her.
The planned meeting would be their first face-to-face interaction, taking place in the wake of the dramatic U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were transported to New York to face drug and weapons charges.
Machado, who received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her role in Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, had previously said she had not spoken to Trump since October when the award was announced.
Trump has suggested that Venezuela is not yet ready to hold elections and said the country must be rebuilt before any democratic process can take place.
The White House has not immediately provided further details on the itinerary or agenda for Machado’s visit, which is expected to attract international attention amid ongoing uncertainty over Venezuela’s political transition.
