UN applauds FCT’s efforts in combating Sexual, Gender-Based Violence
The United Nations has commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for adopting a multisectoral strategy in addressing cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
This commendation was given by Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, the UN Special Representative on Violence Against Children, during her visit to the Awyetu Sexual Assault Referral Centre located in Bwari.
Dr. M’jid expressed satisfaction with the level of collaboration among various ministries and agencies, stressing that the fight against SGBV should not be left to women affairs ministries alone but must involve health, justice, and active community participation.
She also identified Nigeria as a dedicated pathfinder nation committed to ending violence against children, urging authorities to translate national pledges into tangible, sustainable services for survivors.
The Awyetu Centre, which was established in 2020 through the EU-funded ROLAC programme, continues to offer comprehensive medical, legal, and psychosocial assistance to victims of sexual violence.
