UN approves 2-year international stabilization force for Gaza

The United Nations Security Council has approved a landmark resolution authorizing the deployment of an international security force to the Gaza Strip for an initial period of two years. The decision follows months of escalating violence, humanitarian crises, and deteriorating conditions in the territory.

The force led by a coalition of UN member states is expected to take on responsibilities including protecting civilians, securing humanitarian aid routes, supporting reconstruction efforts, and helping stabilize the region. The resolution passed with broad international support, reflecting a growing consensus on the need for direct intervention.

Speaking after the vote, UN officials emphasized that the mission is not a combat operation but a peace-stabilization effort aimed at reducing tensions and preventing further loss of life. The deployment will work alongside humanitarian agencies already operating in Gaza.

Member nations backing the resolution described the decision as “urgent and necessary,” citing the worsening humanitarian situation and repeated breakdowns of ceasefire agreements. They noted that without international assistance, the region risks further instability that could spread beyond Gaza.

While the resolution received strong global support, some countries expressed reservations about the force’s rules of engagement, funding, and operational structure. Discussions on these details are ongoing, with deployment expected to begin once logistics and troop contributions are finalized.

The move marks one of the most significant UN interventions in Gaza in recent years and is expected to play a critical role in restoring order and supporting long term peace efforts.
