U.S. moves to approve sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia as crown Prince visits Washington
The United States is preparing to move forward with a landmark plan to sell advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman begins a high-profile visit to Washington ,his first since global backlash followed the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
President Donald Trump confirmed the proposed sale during ongoing discussions with the visiting Saudi leader. If fully approved, the agreement would make Saudi Arabia the first Arab nation to acquire the F-35, one of the world’s most sophisticated stealth combat aircraft. The development is expected to significantly reshape military power dynamics in the Middle East.
The crown prince’s visit marks a symbolic return to the American political stage after years of diplomatic tension. According to U.S. officials, talks between the two leaders revolve around defense cooperation, regional security, and strengthening bilateral ties. For Washington, the deal aligns with its strategic interests in countering regional threats and maintaining strong influence in the Gulf.
Security analysts say the sale could elevate Saudi Arabia’s air-power capabilities considerably, placing the kingdom in a new league of military strength. However, human rights groups have already voiced concerns about expanding the Saudi arsenal, citing past civilian casualties linked to the country’s involvement in the Yemen conflict.
Despite these concerns, both governments appear committed to deepening military cooperation. U.S. officials emphasize that the sale is still subject to full congressional approval and strict oversight measures to ensure proper use of the aircraft.
The crown prince is expected to meet with senior American officials throughout the week, with discussions likely to cover energy, regional diplomacy, and broader economic cooperation.
