Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on a state visit at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing environmental and industrial collaboration between the two nations.

In a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, it was disclosed that Shettima is expected to take part in the official launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Programme.

This ambitious environmental initiative targets planting 20 billion tree seedlings within four years to fight deforestation, preserve biodiversity, and tackle the impact of climate change.

The statement highlighted that the Vice President’s participation underlines Nigeria’s dedication to promoting regional climate action and sustainable environmental practices. During his stay, Shettima will tour significant industrial zones and agricultural establishments in Ethiopia, including the Adama Industrial Zone, Mojo Poultry Farm, Shera Dibandiba Mojo Family Integrated Farm, Lume Avocado Nursery Site, and the Bishoftu Pea Youth Farm. These facilities have played critical roles in Ethiopia’s agricultural and industrial advancement, particularly in food production, agro-processing, and youth-driven agribusiness.

As part of his engagements, Vice President Shettima will also attend a State Dinner organised in his honour at the National Palace by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The event is expected to reaffirm the strong diplomatic bond between Nigeria and Ethiopia, rooted in years of cooperation on military support, peacekeeping, and regional economic initiatives.

Both countries have recently increased consultations on pressing continental challenges and mutual concerns within the African Union and other multilateral platforms.

This visit is expected to further strengthen those ties while creating fresh opportunities for investment, technology exchange, and climate-smart agricultural initiatives.

The Vice President is accompanied by senior government officials and technical experts from relevant ministries and agencies.
