We will deliver a people-oriented constitution, Says Deputy Speaker Kalu

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly is committed to delivering a people-oriented Constitution.
Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day retreat organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Kalu highlighted the significance of reviewing bills, incorporating input from consultants, familiarising members with the bill contents, prioritising them based on national interest, and preparing for zonal public hearings and a joint harmonisation meeting with the Senate. He commended his colleagues for their dedication and hard work in the process.
As the Chairman of the Committee, the Deputy Speaker emphasised the importance of the current constitutional review process, urging his colleagues to remain steadfast in their commitment. He expressed confidence that their collective efforts would yield a Constitution that truly represents the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
During the retreat, the committee reviewed, rectified, and voted on over 151 bills referred to it by the House. The bills, categorised into thematic areas, addressed key issues such as the federal structure and power devolution, local government autonomy, public revenue, fiscal federation, revenue allocation, and electoral and judicial reforms.
Kalu remarked, “We are immensely proud of you. On behalf of the Speaker, the representatives, and the leadership of the National Assembly, I extend my appreciation. You have not failed us.
“From the moment you took on this responsibility, we recognised the enormity of the task ahead. We also understand that time is of the essence, as we aim to complete the first phase of our work before the next electoral period.
“However, with the team spirit and dedication we have demonstrated, it is clear that our objective is within reach. This progress has been made possible because we supported one another, because we believe Nigeria can be better than we inherited it, and because we have listened to the voices of the people we represent. We want their aspirations to be reflected in a truly people-oriented Constitution, as envisioned in the preamble: ‘We, the people of Nigeria.’ This Constitution must embody the collective desires of the citizens.
“You are the architects of a greater future for Nigeria. You are the chefs in the kitchen, baking a better Nigeria than we have ever known. Do not give up. If you remain steadfast in this work, Nigerians will soon reap the benefits of your dedication.
“There may be challenges along the way, but your determination and diligence have paved the path towards the greater heights we seek.
“Let us continue to strengthen this bond among us. Let us not stop at this retreat but remain partners in progress in making this dream a reality. Thank you for your commitment. The Speaker and I are proud of you.”
