Wike slams moves to woo Peter Obi back to PDP, calls it dangerous for the party
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described discussions about former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s possible return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as dangerous and hypocritical.
Some PDP leaders are reportedly making efforts to bring Obi back into the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with hopes of fielding him as their presidential candidate. Obi, who contested under the Labour Party in the 2023 election, recently promised to serve only one term if elected, saying four years would be enough to transform Nigeria.
In separate interviews, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro confirmed that moves were being made to woo Obi back to the PDP.
However, during a media chat on Monday, Wike dismissed the idea, insisting that Obi’s return would only harm the party’s credibility and ideological foundation.
“To what? Bringing Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi that was abusing the party, saying it is rotten — so the party is now good enough for him? Ambition can make people even go to Satan’s house,” Wike said.
He warned that such a move would undermine the PDP’s principles and destroy any remaining ideological stance.
“If you want to destroy this party, dare it — bring Obi. There’s no way he will come back just because of ambition. No more ideology, no longer principle,” he added.
