Workers driving Nigeria to greatness, says Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised Nigerian workers as the indomitable force propelling the nation towards its long-sought prosperity.
In a statement issued by his media office to mark the 2025 Workers’ Day, Atiku praised the invaluable contributions of Nigerian workers, describing their resilience and sacrifices as the heartbeat of national development.
He stated that the true spirit of Workers’ Day can only be fully realised when both the government and private sector leaders prioritise the welfare of workers in national discourse and action. According to him, the condition of the workforce serves as a mirror reflecting the health and vitality of a nation’s economy, an undeniable barometer of socio-economic well-being.
“In the face of relentless hardship and meagre compensation, Nigerian workers have continued to shoulder the burdens of our economic aspirations with silent heroism,” he said. “Yet, it is disheartening that those entrusted with the reins of policy and governance have failed to reciprocate this steadfast commitment with tangible acts of support and justice.”
Atiku expressed concern that, despite prevailing economic challenges, the current government has yet to implement meaningful palliative measures to ease the suffering of workers.
He called on the leadership of labour unions to persist in their noble advocacy for good governance, describing their efforts as the last bastion of hope for the average Nigerian. He stressed that their voices must continue to champion accountability, transparency, and equity.
Highlighting the significance of International Workers’ Day, Atiku described it as a solemn tribute to the sweat and spirit of workers. He emphasised that its true essence must be reflected in increased productivity, renewed patriotism, and an unwavering respect for labour.
He urged governments at all levels to uphold the sanctity of workers’ rights and privileges, insisting that these must remain inviolable and be zealously protected.
“The labour force is the soul of our nation,” Atiku affirmed. “It is both the face and the force of the people. It is, therefore, imperative that governments and employers erect unyielding safeguards to protect the dignity, benefits, and entitlements that rightly belong to workers.”
He also called on policymakers to draw inspiration from this year’s Workers’ Day theme, “Social Justice and Decent Work: Safety and Health of Workers,” urging them to regard the labour force not merely as a tool but as an equal partner in the journey towards national greatness.
