Tragic tanker crash claims 18 lives in Enugu, 13 rescued
A devastating accident in Enugu on Saturday involving a petrol tanker and multiple vehicles resulted in the loss of 18 lives, with 13 others rescued.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the tragic incident occurred when a petroleum-laden tanker suffered brake failure, leading to a collision with 16 other vehicles, including a water tanker, cars, and a tricycle. The impact caused a massive fire, which consumed 11 vehicles.
According to the FRSC, a total of 31 people were involved in the crash. While three individuals escaped unscathed, 10 sustained injuries, and 18 were burnt beyond recognition.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State joined the rescue operation alongside FRSC officials and other emergency responders. Traffic was diverted from the scene to ease movement as the evacuation of charred vehicles commenced.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to road safety protocols.
“This incident highlights the critical need for vigilance and compliance with road regulations to prevent such tragedies,” he stated.
Motorists have been advised to consider alternative routes while clean-up efforts continue at the accident site.
