Senate passes FRSC Amendment, Dietitians Council of Nigeria Bills
The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill and the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill.
Both bills, which originated from the House of Representatives, were presented by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central. Bamidele led the debate during Tuesday’s plenary and moved the motion for concurrence, which was seconded by Senator Olalere Oyewumi, representing Osun West.
After a debate on their general principles, the bills were read a second time and referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration. Following deliberations, they were read a third time and passed.
Meanwhile, the Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, Oke-Igbo, Ondo State (Establishment) Bill, which was listed on the order paper, was stepped down due to the federal government’s decision not to establish any new higher institutions for the next seven years.
Also, the Criminal Code Act (Amendment) Bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative work.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while commending the passage of the two bills, said the amendments would enhance road safety and strengthen public health awareness across the country.
“I hope that the conditions of our roads will be regulated and lead to safety. I also encourage the FRSC to ensure that our roads are safe,” Akpabio said.
Speaking further, he noted that the establishment of the Dietitians Council of Nigeria would help improve public health education nationwide.
“For the Dietitians Council of Nigeria, this well-regulated bill will ensure that they assist the public, through the National Orientation Agency, on what they should eat and how to prevent diseases,” he added.
Akpabio also commended members of the House of Representatives for their contributions and detailed scrutiny of the bills, describing their efforts as “painstaking and commendable.”
