IGP’s appointment fully confirmed, Sowore’s allegations baseless – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly refuted allegations made by activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, regarding the legality of the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described Sowore’s claims as “baseless and misleading,” asserting that the IGP’s appointment was fully compliant with the law and had been duly confirmed by the Police Council.
Citing the Police Act 2020 (as amended), the police clarified that the IGP’s four-year tenure is explicitly stated in Section 7(6) of the Act. Additionally, the amendment to Section 8A ensures that any appointed IGP remains in office for the full term stipulated in their appointment letter. This, the statement noted, guarantees stability in police leadership and enables the implementation of long-term security strategies.
IGP Egbetokun’s appointment, which took effect on 31 October 2023, is set to run until 31 October 2027. The police emphasised that his tenure had received the necessary presidential confirmation, making any claims to the contrary unfounded and misleading.
The Force condemned Sowore’s remarks as an attempt to erode public confidence in the police and spread disinformation that could undermine national security. It urged the public to disregard such narratives and instead support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security across the country.
“We caution individuals and groups against promoting false narratives that could mislead the public and jeopardise national security,” the statement read. “It is imperative that discourse on national matters remains factual and constructive.”
The Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all Nigerians and called for continued public cooperation in fostering security and stability.
