Okorie outlines political roadmap for Ndigbo ahead of 2027 elections
Founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and convener of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has unveiled a new political strategy aimed at repositioning the Igbo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okorie disclosed the plan at a press conference in Enugu, where he said the initiative was designed to strengthen Igbo political engagement and ensure that the region’s interests are properly articulated at the national level.
He said the Igbo Agenda Dialogue, inaugurated in August 2025, is a non-partisan platform created to mobilise political stakeholders, encourage unity and promote active participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Okorie noted that despite the end of the civil war in 1970, the Southeast has continued to face political and economic challenges, including what he described as marginalisation in federal appointments, poor infrastructure and the neglect of major seaports in the region.
According to him, the new strategy will focus on collective action and voter mobilisation to prevent Igbo votes from being taken for granted in future elections.
He also raised concerns over voter apathy in the Southeast, citing official figures which showed that only about 2.2 million of over 11.5 million registered voters in the region participated in the 2023 presidential election.
As part of the strategy, Okorie announced plans to convene the first Igbo Political Summit in 56 years, scheduled for April 2026 in Enugu, where an Igbo Political Charter is expected to be presented.
He said the summit would serve as a platform to outline a common political direction for Ndigbo ahead of 2027 and beyond.
