Two Nigerians arrested in India over alleged killing of friend
Two Nigerian nationals have been arrested in India in connection with the alleged killing of their compatriot, Emeka Christian, during a violent altercation in the Pisoli area of Pune, Maharashtra State.
The suspects, identified as Chukwudi Okafor, 31, and Samuel Eze, 34, were taken into custody following the incident, which reportedly occurred during a late-night gathering on Sunday.
According to a report by India Today, the 40-year-old victim was at the residence of a Nigerian woman in Pisoli, where several Nigerians had gathered for dinner, when an argument broke out. Police said the disagreement was linked to a romantic relationship involving the woman and one of the suspects.
Investigators disclosed that Christian was said to have raised objections to the relationship, leading to growing tension among those present. The dispute reportedly escalated in the early hours of Monday, culminating in a violent confrontation around 3 a.m.
Senior Police Inspector Mansing Patil said the victim was allegedly assaulted and struck with a hard object during the clash. Christian was subsequently rushed to a hospital by Gift Utah, Vice President of the Nigerian Students Union in Pune, but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Following the incident, police registered a case under Section 103 (murder) and Section 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend a third suspect believed to be involved in the attack.
Police further disclosed that the deceased was a resident of Pisoli and operated a garment trading business. He was reportedly in possession of a valid passport and visa permitting him to remain in India until 2027.
The arrested suspects are also said to be engaged in the clothing trade. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing.
