The management of Gombe State University has confirmed a security breach at one of its female hostels, where a final-year student was attacked by an intruder in the early hours of Monday.

In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Hadu Ligari, the incident was described as an unfortunate occurrence that happened while students were still on academic break.

According to the statement, the student, who was reportedly preparing for her final-year project defence, was attacked inside the female hostel by an unidentified intruder.

University security personnel were said to have responded promptly after the incident was reported, immediately securing the area to prevent further harm and ensure the safety of other residents.

“The University Security responded swiftly, and immediate steps were taken to protect the affected student and safeguard others within the hostel,” Ligari stated.

Following the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, alongside other members of the university management, visited the hostel to assess the situation and receive firsthand briefings.

The student sustained injuries while trying to defend herself during the attack. The university disclosed that she suffered deep cuts on her hands but has since received medical attention and is now in stable condition.

“She sustained a deep cut on her hands while attempting to ward off the attacker. She has been treated and is currently stable,” the statement added.

The university management reassured students, parents and members of the public that measures are being taken to strengthen security across the campus.

Ligari said the institution remains committed to providing a safe learning and living environment and would continue to review and reinforce its security architecture to prevent a recurrence.

“The University assures all stakeholders that security measures are being reinforced to guarantee the safety of everyone on campus,” he said.
