Rivers United’s Champions League hopes fade after home loss to Power Dynamos
Rivers United’s CAF Champions League campaign suffered a major setback on Sunday following a 1–0 home defeat to Zambia’s Power Dynamos in their Group A, Matchday Four clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The defeat leaves the Nigerian champions bottom of Group A with just one point from four matches, further complicating their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
Knowing that only victory would keep their qualification hopes alive, Finidi George’s side started the encounter with urgency, dominating possession and pinning the visitors back in the opening exchanges.
Despite their early control, Rivers United struggled to penetrate a disciplined Power Dynamos defence. Clear-cut chances were limited as the Zambian side remained compact and well organised at the back.
Encouraged by last weekend’s goalless draw in Ndola, Power Dynamos gradually settled into the contest. Head coach Osward Mutapa had earlier warned that Rivers United were dangerous but vulnerable, and his team appeared content to soak up pressure while waiting for counter-attacking opportunities.
The first half ended goalless, with both goalkeepers rarely tested. However, the complexion of the game changed shortly after the restart.
Five minutes into the second half, Rivers United were caught out defensively as Power Dynamos launched a swift attack down the right flank. Kondwani Chiboni met the resulting cross at the near post, firing past Osagie Onisodumeya to silence the home crowd.
The goal exposed Rivers United’s defensive frailties, worsened by the absence of injured defender Ogechukwu Ogbe. Finidi had reshuffled his backline, pairing Stephen Manyo with Boluwaji Sholumade, while Duke Osimaga was drafted into midfield alongside Wasiu Falolu.
Rivers United responded by pushing more players forward in search of an equaliser and enjoyed sustained pressure in the closing stages. However, their attacking play lacked the cutting edge needed to breach the resolute Zambian defence.
The result leaves Rivers United facing an uphill task in Group A, which is now led by Pyramids FC on 10 points following their 3–0 victory over RS Berkane.
With only one point from four matches, the Nigerian side must now secure maximum points in their remaining fixtures, starting with a daunting home clash against group leaders Pyramids, to keep their continental ambitions alive.
