Sultan announces Ramadan Moon sighting dates for 2026
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has announced that Muslims across Nigeria will begin searching for the crescent moon on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to determine the start of Ramadan 1447 A.H.
If sighted, the holy month will commence on Wednesday, February 18; if not, Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19.
In a statement, NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede highlighted the challenges facing Muslims in Nigeria, citing “heightened Islamophobic hysteria, insecurity, and perceived media bias against Muslims.” He lamented that “the media have consistently failed to uphold the principles of truth, fairness and objectivity in matters concerning Muslims.”
The Council also criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for scheduling elections during Ramadan, calling the move “not unexpected” and stating that they would be monitoring the situation closely. “We are watching very closely and expecting an immediate review,” the statement warned.
Prof. Oloyede urged Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith, quoting the Quran: “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (“Verily, with hardship comes ease”), adding that the month of Ramadan is an opportunity to reflect, repent, and pray for guidance and succour.
The NSCIA encouraged the faithful to use the occasion to strengthen spiritual devotion, uphold patience, and seek the greatness of Allah during the holy month.
