Afenifere Leader, Ayo Adebanjo passes away at 96

Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, a key nationalist and co-founder of the Afenifere movement, has died at the age of 96. He passed away on Friday, 14th February 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos.

His family confirmed his death in a statement, which said, “He died peacefully this morning at his Lekki home.”

Adebanjo was a well-known lawyer, former organising secretary of the Action Group, and the national leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere. He leaves behind his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family praised his unwavering commitment to fighting for truth, justice, and a fairer Nigeria, saying he worked tirelessly for a truly independent and progressive nation right until the end.

Plans for a fitting funeral are currently being made, with consultations taking place with his friends, associates, and various groups both in Nigeria and abroad. Further details will be shared in due course.
