Remi Tinubu preaches mercy, compassion at Lambeth Palace during UK visit
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, delivered a sermon centred on mercy, compassion, and spiritual renewal at Lambeth Palace, the historic residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The sermon, delivered on Thursday, formed part of activities marking the second day of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the United Kingdom.
In the brief homily, which lasted about six minutes, the First Lady emphasised the importance of daily renewal and the need for individuals and societies to embrace fresh mercy in the face of global uncertainty. She anchored her message on biblical teachings, calling for a more compassionate and humane world order.
Filming was not permitted inside the chapel during the service.
Following the sermon, prayers were offered for Nigeria by members of the Anglican Church, underscoring the country’s longstanding ties with the global Anglican Communion.
Mrs Tinubu was later taken on a tour of historic artefacts and materials showcasing the church’s global outreach, including its enduring relationship with Nigeria.
At a reception held afterwards, she interacted with representatives of the Church of England and faith-based organisations, where she revealed that she was born and raised in the Anglican tradition.
She also noted her ordination as a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 2018, reflecting her continued involvement in faith-based engagements.
Church leaders at the event highlighted the importance of unity and the role of religious voices in governance and addressing social challenges.
Situated along the River Thames opposite the Palace of Westminster, Lambeth Palace has, for centuries, hosted global dignitaries, heads of state, and cultural figures. However, no Nigerian official is widely known to have previously preached at the historic chapel.
