Passion of Christ actor killed by firework during church rehearsal in Cross River

A tragic incident has struck the Christian community in Cross River State, as a Mass Communication graduate, Michael Obeten, lost his life on Good Friday while coaching youths during a Passion of Christ play.

The incident occurred at Holy Cross Catholic Church Ugep, located in Ugep Local Government Area, where Obeten was a devoted member.

Obeten, who had previously portrayed Jesus Christ in the church’s Passion play in 2023 and 2024, was assisting younger actors during this year’s performance when tragedy struck. At Station 12 — depicting the death of Jesus — a locally made firework known as “oginigbo,” intended to simulate a thunder effect, malfunctioned.

The explosive device reportedly discharged improperly, with a sharp iron fragment striking Obeten in the head. He immediately collapsed. Witnesses initially believed he was acting until blood began gushing from his head, nose, and mouth, revealing the severity of the injury.

At the time of the incident, Obeten was dressed in a black shirt, black trousers, and a baseball cap, actively supporting the production by handling microphones, stage props, and makeup for the performers.

The shocking incident has left the clergy, church members, and the wider Ugep community in deep mourning throughout the Easter period.

Reacting briefly, the parish priest in charge of the church expressed grief over the loss, saying, “It has happened. God knows best.”

The incident has once again raised concerns over the use of improvised pyrotechnics during religious and public performances, particularly in settings lacking adequate safety measures.
