Edun, Dangiwa resigned voluntarily, not sacked — Presidency clarifies

The Presidency has clarified that the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, voluntarily resigned from the Federal Executive Council and were not dismissed as earlier reported.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Edun stepped down on health grounds before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his replacement.

According to the statement, Edun—who recently turned 70—submitted his resignation letter on his birthday, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Presidency quoted Edun as saying, adding that Nigeria had become “stronger, more resilient, and more internationally respected” under Tinubu’s leadership.

The statement further disclosed that before his exit was formally announced, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa, where he held a private meeting before departing to focus on personal engagements.

Dangiwa, who also resigned from the cabinet, was said to have expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve. He previously held key positions, including Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and Secretary to the Katsina State Government.

Following the changes, Edun has been succeeded by Taiwo Oyedele, who has been directed to consolidate ongoing economic reforms and strengthen fiscal policy implementation.

The Presidency also confirmed that a new nominee, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, will be forwarded to the National Assembly for confirmation as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to both former ministers for their contributions to the administration’s economic and housing reforms and wished them success in their future endeavours.
