Osun Account Freeze: Adeleke orders legal action against EFCC
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the state’s Attorney-General to institute legal proceedings against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of a state government account.
The directive followed the anti-graft agency’s decision to place an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank under a “Post No Debit” restriction.
Addressing journalists at the Government House in Osogbo, Adeleke described the action as a violation of the rule of law and demanded that the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, publicly explain the reason for the restriction.
The governor also called on Nigerians and residents of Osun State to pay close attention to the development, describing it as an issue of significant public interest.
“All I ask is for the EFCC chairman to explain to the good people of Osun State and Nigerians in general why he froze the Osun State Government account and provide evidence to support whatever reason he presents.
“This and other actions being taken against Osun State are turning our democracy into a huge joke,” Adeleke said.
He disclosed that he had instructed the state’s Attorney-General to file a suit before the Federal High Court in Osogbo to challenge the EFCC’s action.
The EFCC had earlier placed the account, reportedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries, under a “Post No Debit” restriction.
As of the time of filing this report, the commission had not publicly disclosed the reason for freezing the account.
