Cameroon Suspends Opposition Party

Authorities in Cameroon have suspended the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), an opposition party led by former government minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, for three months.

The suspension was announced on Tuesday by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, who accused the party of inciting insurrection and causing serious public disorder.

According to the ministry’s statement, the alleged offences occurred before, during and after Cameroon’s presidential election held on October 12, 2025.

The statement also warned that the party could face legal action if it refused to comply with the suspension.

Bakary emerged as a prominent opposition figure during the election campaign, rallying young people demanding political change. The election was won by 93-year-old President Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982.

After the election, Bakary declared himself the winner and repeatedly urged his supporters to defend what he described as his electoral victory. His calls were followed by protests in major cities across the country.

Security forces violently suppressed the demonstrations, resulting in several deaths. However, the government has yet to disclose an official death toll.

Bakary subsequently fled to The Gambia, where he remains in exile.

The three-month suspension comes ahead of Cameroon’s local and parliamentary elections, scheduled for early 2027 following several postponements.

The FSNC, which has two members in Cameroon’s parliament, is yet to be reported as having formally responded to the latest government action.
