Customs steps up efforts to fight fuel smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has increased its efforts to tackle fuel smuggling, with the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, warning smugglers that they will face tougher times ahead.
This followed the seizure of 28,300 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) worth N35.8 million by officers from Operation Whirlwind, who intercepted the fuel along the Lagos-Ogun border.
Adeniyi stressed that the NCS is focused on protecting Nigeria’s energy security and economic stability. He explained that the fuel seizures made by Operation Whirlwind go beyond simple customs violations and are part of a broader attempt to harm Nigeria’s economy.
In less than three months, Operation Whirlwind has successfully seized 245,370 litres of PMS, valued at N238.1 million. Adeniyi highlighted that the operation’s success is particularly evident in the Lagos-Ogun region, which has seen significant progress.
The seized goods include 1,132 jerrycans, each holding 25 litres, and three vehicles used to transport the fuel. The fuel was being smuggled through well-known routes, with the Badagry-Seme area accounting for 35% of the total seizures.
Adeniyi assured the public that Customs will continue to respond strongly to smuggling tactics, ensuring that smugglers have no safe places in their areas of operation. He praised the dedication and bravery of the Operation Whirlwind team, led by ACG Hussein Ejibunu, for their hard work, integrity, and commitment despite facing challenging conditions.
