Tinubu mourns Nigerian Football Legend Christian Chukwu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu joined millions of Nigerians and football fans across the world in mourning the loss of a true sports icon.

President Tinubu described Chukwu as a towering figure in Nigerian football whose achievements brought pride to the nation. He praised Chukwu’s outstanding leadership as captain of the Green Eagles, leading Nigeria to a historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980, and later as coach of the Super Eagles, guiding them to a bronze finish at the 2004 AFCON.

Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman” for his strong leadership, dedicated his club career to Enugu Rangers, winning multiple national titles and helping the club secure the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup.

President Tinubu described him as more than just a footballer and coach. “He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism who brought joy to millions and mentored a generation of footballers,” he said.

The President added, “His legacy lives on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the unforgettable moments he gave us on the pitch and as a coach. We will remember him with deep respect and admiration.”

President Tinubu offered prayers for the peaceful rest of Chukwu’s soul and comfort for his family, urging them to find strength in his lasting legacy.
