FG reaffirms commitment to Enugu-Port Harcourt Railway project

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has reiterated that the revitalisation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt railway line remains a top priority for the Federal Government, highlighting the project’s importance in the national infrastructure agenda.

Dr. Opeifa made this known during a visit to Governor Peter Mbah at the Enugu State Government House on Thursday. He revealed that the project has been receiving consistent attention and funding from the federal budget. While commending Governor Mbah for his administration’s developmental efforts, he noted that the improvements were already impacting the lives of residents positively.

According to the NRC boss, the visit aimed to deepen cooperation between the NRC and the Enugu State Government, especially on the Eastern Corridor rail line, which links Port Harcourt, Aba, and Enugu. He stressed that the line is crucial for traders and businesspeople who depend on a reliable transport system.

Dr. Opeifa, visibly impressed with the progress in Enugu, described Governor Mbah as a visionary and result-oriented leader. He also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had instructed the NRC to collaborate more with state governments in enhancing transport and boosting economic development.

He further encouraged the Enugu government to prepare for the full potential of the Eastern Railway Line when completed, and called for increased protection of NRC facilities, which have been affected by vandalism from scrap metal scavengers.

Responding, Governor Peter Mbah expressed appreciation for the NRC’s renewed commitment to the Eastern rail line. He recalled the historic importance of Enugu in the railway sector, dating back to the coal export era of 1918, and stated that the revival aligns with demands previously presented by South-East leaders—now approved by President Tinubu.

Governor Mbah also revealed ongoing efforts among regional governments to create a shared economic market that would require strong rail links for smooth operation. He mentioned plans for an intra-state railway that would connect to the NRC’s lines and assured continued collaboration with the Corporation.

He pledged that the state would secure NRC properties, including its clinic, and prevent further vandalism or encroachment.
