Woman Crush Wednesday: Meet Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women’s Affairs and Social Development

Delectable Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, born on 19 April, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, is a distinguished politician and businesswoman known for her dedication to public service and women’s empowerment.

Raised in Abuja, she attended Aruwa Nursery School and Jabi Primary School before proceeding to Federal Government Girls’ College, Bwari, for her secondary education. She earned a degree in Sociology from the University of Abuja and furthered her education at Webster University, London Campus, obtaining a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Arts. She is currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Security and Strategic Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Imaan’s career began at the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS). She later moved to the United Kingdom, gaining experience in human resources, business, and management, and becoming a certified SAP HCM consultant. Upon returning to Nigeria, she held various significant roles, including Special Adviser on Strategic Communication to the Minister of State for Education and membership in the Nasarawa State Economic Advisory Council. She also served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Rome and the Sultana Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership, and Development Studies at the University of Abuja.

In December 2020, Imaan was appointed Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Her leadership led to significant reforms, including Nigeria’s upgrade from the Tier 2 watchlist to Tier 2 status in the US Trafficking in Persons Report.

She later became the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), where she initiated impactful programmes benefiting over two million individuals. Notably, she facilitated the passage of the NCFRMI Act 2022, strengthening national efforts to protect and assist persons of concern.

In August 2023, Imaan made history as Nigeria’s first female Minister of State for Police Affairs. By October 2024, she was appointed Minister of Women’s Affairs, reflecting her commitment to elevating women’s voices and roles in Nigeria.

Throughout her career, Imaan has received numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate in Ghana and recognition as one of Africa’s 100 Most Notable Peace Icons. Her dedication to public service and transformative leadership continues to inspire many across Nigeria and beyond.
