Akuko Foundation marks World Press Freedom Day, calls for protection of Journalists, Transparency

As the global community observes World Press Freedom Day today, Akuko Foundation has issued a strong call for the protection of journalists and greater openness from public institutions.
In a statement released by the media advocacy and training NGO, the foundation expressed deep concern over the growing threats, harassment, arbitrary detention, and attempts to silence journalists in Nigeria and across the world.
“We stand in solidarity with brave individuals and media organisations who risk their lives to reveal the truth in the face of hostility and repression,” the statement read.
Highlighting the critical role of a free press in safeguarding democracy, the foundation warned that attacks on journalists not only endanger lives but also weaken the very fabric of democratic societies.
“Journalism is not a crime — it is a pillar of accountability,” the group stressed, calling on governments and law enforcement agencies to fulfil their duty to protect journalists and ensure justice against those who target them.
Akuko Foundation also urged public institutions to embrace transparency and view journalistic inquiry as an essential element of good governance rather than an adversarial threat.
“As we continue our advocacy and capacity-building initiatives, Akuko Foundation remains committed to defending media freedom and empowering the next generation of storytellers,” the statement added.
The foundation reaffirmed its dedication to promoting press freedom, ethical journalism, and open information access through training programmes, policy advocacy, and efforts to improve institutional accountability.
