BREAKING: American Cardinal Robert Prevost elected as new Pope
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new head of the Catholic Church, becoming the first United States national to assume the position.
His election concluded on the second day of voting at the Vatican, following the death of Pope Francis last month.
Prevost, aged 69, was born in Chicago but has spent the majority of his religious career serving abroad, particularly in Peru and later in Rome. His extensive years of service across different parts of the world are viewed as an asset in guiding the global Church through contemporary challenges.
With his election, Prevost assumes a historic and demanding role, becoming the spiritual leader for over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
