West Ham’s Antonio makes return to football Six Months after deadly crash

West Ham striker Michail Antonio made a long-awaited return to football, featuring for Jamaica in their 1-0 loss to Guatemala in the Gold Cup group stage clash in California.

The 35-year-old came off the bench in the 85th minute, marking his first competitive appearance since surviving a life-threatening car accident last December.

Antonio had been sidelined after his Ferrari crashed into a tree late last year, leaving him with a lower limb fracture that required surgery. He was discharged from the hospital before the year ended and immediately began his recovery journey.

Determined to return stronger, Antonio spent the early part of 2025 in warm-weather training camps in Dubai, before gradually rejoining West Ham’s training sessions. Manager Graham Potter confirmed towards the end of the Premier League season that Antonio had resumed light ball work with the first-team squad.

Although Jamaica couldn’t secure a win in the match, Antonio’s cameo was a significant personal victory. It marked a milestone in his recovery and a testament to his resilience after a harrowing ordeal that nearly claimed his life.
