Bayern Munich thrash Auckland City 10-0 in record Club World Cup win
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich delivered a historic 10-0 demolition of Auckland City in Cincinnati to register the biggest win in the history of the Club World Cup.
Vincent Kompany’s men outclassed the New Zealand part-timers from start to finish, with Jamal Musiala netting a second-half hat-trick and Thomas Muller grabbing a brace as he continues his farewell campaign with the German giants.
Bayern opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Kingsley Coman headed home, setting the tone for a brutal evening for Auckland. Sacha Boey smashed in Coman’s knockdown 12 minutes later, and Michael Olise added a third by turning in Muller’s cross at the far post.
The floodgates stayed open as Coman bagged his second with a low drive before Muller guided home another cross to make it five. Olise then curled in a stunning effort to complete a dominant first half at 6-0.
Though Bayern slowed their onslaught after the break, substitute Musiala made an instant impact with a curled finish before scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled in the box. He completed his hat-trick by capitalising on a loose ball deep in Auckland’s half.
Muller added his second and Bayern’s 10th two minutes from time, turning in Serge Gnabry’s cross to seal a record-breaking scoreline — surpassing the previous tournament record of Al Hilal’s 6-1 win over Al Jazira in 2022.
One of the major talking points remains the wisdom of expanding the Club World Cup from seven to 32 teams. The gulf in quality was painfully evident, with the part-time side from New Zealand — whose players include teachers, students, and estate agents — outclassed by the 34-time German champions.
While Musiala shone on his return from injury and veteran Muller increased his goal tally to 250 for Bayern, Michael Olise also stood out with two goals and two assists in a dazzling display before being withdrawn at half-time.
England captain Harry Kane was left frustrated, failing to find the net despite having two clear chances before being substituted in the second half.
Bayern’s Manuel Neuer barely touched the ball as Auckland managed just one attempt, while Bayern peppered Auckland’s goal with 31 shots, 17 of them on target.
Next, Auckland will face Benfica on June 20, while Bayern clash with Boca Juniors in Miami early the following day.
