Real Madrid have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Juventus on Tuesday night.

The tense encounter, which delivered plenty of high-intensity football, was ultimately decided by a fine second-half header from young forward Gonzalo Garcia.

Both sides approached the opening half cautiously, with Juventus, led by manager Igor Tudor, starting on the front foot. Randal Kolo Muani went close early on, firing just over the bar in the 8th minute, while Madrid’s Federico Valverde nearly replied with a shot of his own a minute later.

Goalkeepers Thibaut Courtois and Michele Di Gregorio were kept busy, with Courtois pulling off a fine stop to deny Francisco Conceicao’s header in the 23rd minute, while Di Gregorio saved from Vinicius Junior earlier in the 12th.

The breakthrough finally came in the 54th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped in a precise cross for Garcia, who rose highest to plant a header into the top corner, leaving Di Gregorio with no chance.

Juventus responded immediately, with Conceicao testing Courtois again, but the Madrid goalkeeper was alert. Madrid’s attacking duo, Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler, continued to threaten, with Guler forcing a strong save in the 72nd minute and Vinicius seeing his effort cleared off the line late in the game.

Despite Juventus throwing men forward in the closing moments, Madrid’s defence, marshalled by Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen, remained solid to protect their slender lead.

The result means Real Madrid progress to the quarterfinals as they continue their pursuit of global honours, while Juventus bow out of the tournament after a spirited display.
