Beatrice Chebet shatters 5,000m World record as Faith Kipyegon breaks 1,500m mark
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet has made history by smashing the world record in the women’s 5,000 metres, clocking an incredible 13 minutes, 58.06 seconds to win the event at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.
Chebet became the first woman ever to run the distance in under 14 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 14 minutes, 0.21 seconds set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the same competition last year.
It was a memorable day for Kenyan athletics as Faith Kipyegon also delivered a stunning performance, breaking the world record in the women’s 1,500 metres. Kipyegon crossed the line in 3 minutes, 48.68 seconds, improving on her own record of 3 minutes, 49.04, which she set in July last year ahead of the Paris Olympic Games.
Both performances have drawn admiration across the athletics world, cementing Kenya’s dominance in middle and long-distance running.
